Drive and Performance 5.7/10
The Corolla Hybrid prioritizes a gentle ride over an exciting driving experience. Its ride remains smooth over uneven pavement, and the steering feels sufficiently accurate. Front-wheel drive is standard, and the Corolla is one of the few hybrid cars available with all-wheel drive. Critics are mixed on the brakes: Some say they’re too grabby, while others note they feel just fine.
This Toyota features a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, two electric motors and a lithium-ion battery pack that put out a combined 138 horsepower. This is enough juice to make the Corolla Hybrid feel capable around town, but it’s lackluster at higher speeds and can struggle to accelerate with any haste. The transition between gas and electric power is smooth. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is standard and mostly goes unnoticed, but it can be noisy at high speeds.
